SIDS

I thought I would share this information with you. I find it pretty interesting and the research seems fairly thorough. I have now come across this theory on several different websites, including news reports and a brief article in Fit Pregnancy magazine.

What do you think?

Hmm.... Interesting article. Not exactly sure what to think. I posted this on one of the mom boards I belong to. They made some good points about being leary of an article like this that is on the same site as where you can buy the "cure".

I personally hate it when the "medical" community uses scare tactics on parents. You want to be rational about it, but they always play up the "WHAT IF!!??" part in your heart and mind.

That being said, doesn't mean there might be some truth in what they are saying.

Lol, yeah, big help, I know! Sorry!

That is what I was thinking too. There may be truth in it, but I am wondering why this doctor's name is not all over the media, if he really has found the cure for SIDS. I think I will keep reseaching. Thanks for the input Laura, and keep me updated!

Jess, I was still thinking about this and was wondering..... if these mattresses give off poisonous fumes, the age of the deceased children shouldn't matter. Why would it be able to poison a baby under 6mo, but not a toddler?

Another person I spoke with about it said they read that SIDS was caused by an abnormality in the brain stem that was exaccerbated (but not caused by) babies sleepng on their tummy. This makes more sense to me.

I still try to prevent though as much as possible and elminate other "links" like second hand smoke and keeping a child too warm, and also try to add good factors in like binkies that the SIDS org says helps reduce the risk.

It is kinda funny that they sell the cure :) but I actually have read this info in other places -- that mattresses, all mattresses, but esp. crib ones b/c of waterproofing, etc contain toxic chemicals. i'm sure they do, everything does these days (did u know that like 80,000 new chemicals have been invented in the past 60 yrs???)

B4 T. my mom bought me an "organic" matress that is just cotton, padding and steel basically.
So while I don't know about them causing SIDS or not, the used plasticy crib mattress that i'm borrowing is gonna go in T.'s toddler bed, not in the crib for B. since she's the one who is little still. i don't know . . . . wish i had the $$ to buy another organic one.

Jess,

Very interesting article. I think this make lots of sense. And I am not surprised about the media picking up on it, because we know the media is for the most part, bought off. So if there is governmental regulations saying that these chemicals need to be added, and for what would seem as good reason, fire retardation, then there will be no way that the companies and the government would be willing to take on that liability.

So just for safety sake, where are some resources to by mattresses that are just cotton like your friend was talking about. I know that I could really care less is the mattress is fire retardant or water proof. Regular mattresses are not, so why should the babies.

Also to answer the question about age, why it would affect a 6 month and younger, as opposed to a toddler? It comes down to the respritory system and its growth. A youngster would be affected more by gases because their respritory system can't defend like a toddlers could. Food For Thought.
